The aim of this Learning lab is to enable you to implement Imaginal Exposure (IE) effectively and immediately in an online setting. IE is generally regarded as one of the most effective techniques within schema therapy. IE acknowledges that the bio-psychological environment in which traumatic memories were formed often leaves these memories inaccessible to talking therapy. In these cases, words aren’t enough. As a result, therapists are inhibited from using imagery to bring back images from that charged past for fear of decompensation. IE employs schema-based therapeutic approaches that directly access maladaptive trauma-related images, and create new experiences of these memories characterised by mastery and nurture.
This 2-day Learning Lab aims to make therapists more proficient in applying imagery exposure. Existing skills will be refined and challenging situations discussed and practised. However the focus of the workshop is skill development. The Learning Lab will begin with an explanation of IE and a synopsis of new developments in the field. The generic therapeutic tool of anchoring will be described and demonstrated. Anchoring is a stand-alone tool often used in the somatic management of anxiety.
The Learning Lab follows the action learning method. After describing a case example the trainers will do a live demonstration of the skill. Furthermore you will, in pairs, rehearse the skill experiencing it both as clinician and client; and last you will be given the opportunity to apply the skill to a current case, before discussing this case with a fellow participant.
After completing this course the participant is able to explain the rationale of Prolonged Exposure to the client, and can apply imaginal exposure, exposure in vivo and its combination to PTSD-clients.
